Cantine Astoni is a wine grower and vintner located in the heart of the Campi Flegrei area outside of Naples.

It aims at safeguarding and developing the vines originally from the Campania and reinterpreting, using modern innovative methods, the wine-making traditions of the territory. The vineyard is on the outer slopes of the Astroni crater, at one time a royal hunting reserve, and now a natural reserve managed by the World Wildlife Fund of Italy.

It was here, in this unique territory that the first Greek colonists, 800 years before Christ, began their expansion through Italy, bringing with them several varieties of grape whose genetic patrimony is still intact in the grapevines of the Campania.

Two of these, Falanghina flegrea and Piedirosso, are the varieties the vineyard is principally growing. The soil, due to the continuous volcanic eruptions of the Campi Flegrei and Mount Vesuvius, is rich in tuff, ashes, pomices, volcanic gravel, and microelements which endow the grapes and the wine made from them with special aromas and flavors. The Varchetta family, with four generations and more than one hundred years dedicated to making wine on this land, possesses a modern winemaking culture that respects tradition while looking towards the future. The itinerary of our visit follows the whole winemaking process from the vine to the bottle. A stroll through time and into the flavor of different wines, experiencing a historic vineyard managed by modern methods, inside the city which hides many surprises. We end our visit with a wine tasting experience of the three wines produced at the Cantina accompanied by delicious local cold cuts.
